Building to Building Organizing & Affordable Housing Preservation Program

The program empowers tenants in market rate apartment buildings to form tenants associations. The associations are then able to organize and negotiate to get repairs, stop evictions, prevent condo conversions, etc. Organizers work onsite with tenants to negotiate with the landlord, secure the support of city officials such as building inspectors or aldermen, and provide them with access to financial and legal resources. Tenants learn important skills such as facilitating meetings, preparing press releases, negotiating with landlords and other officials, etc. The goal of the program is preserve market rate affordable housing by involving tenants and to keep tenants in their housing.
